Geelong area trainers took the honours in the heats of the Geelong Advertiser Young Star Classic held at a cold and wet Beckley Park on Friday night, winning six of the eight heats.

Heat 1 saw Jessica Albaz exit the 5 box and lead all the way in 25:79 with splits of 6:74 and 14:23 for Ballarat trainer Derek Coldstream, Que Sera Sera provided Angela Langton with the first leg of a training double and owning treble when this daughter of Big Daddy Cool x Dash Of Burgundy flew from the red and soon had the race beyond doubt in 25:65, Scoring by 3.25 lengths she recorded sectionals of 6:69 and 14:10.

Heat 3 provided the closest finish of the night and the photo fooled most of the onlookers.  Zoolander sped out from box 8 and recorded the fastest first split of the night in 6.62, Level Five had retained the rail and by the time the second peg was reached in 14:11 had taken over.  Upon straightening the Kevin Mugavin trained Elite Currency has extricated himself from the pack and set out after the leader but failed by a nose when the post was reached.

Lara trainer Darren Brown provided the upset of the night with outsider Niagara Mist taking out heat 4 at the odds of $35.90 in a time of 25:93 with splits of 6:77 and 14:31.  Two races later he scored again with litter brother Cosmic Zeus ( Token Prince  x  Kilby Supreme ) in the fastest time of the night of 25:40. Recording splits of 6:71 and 14:04 Cosmic Zeus raced away to score by 5 lengths.

Mis Tayliana provided David Geall with a well deserved win in heat 5 as he trained the runner-up in heat 1, Unit Roxon.  Owned by Angela Langton Miss Tayliana is a litter sister to tthe winner of heat 2, Que Sera Sera.  She recorded splits of 6:76, 14:20 and overall time of 25:67.

Robert Brittion continued the successful run of local Geelong area trainers when he took out heat 7 with Maximum Revs in 25:90.

Darren McDonald had to wait until the final heat to gain a place in the $7,000 to the winner final when Migrate stormed home to score narrowly in a time of 26:11.

A fantastic field has been assembled for the Final nect Friday Night and the box draw will be all important to the result.

Geelong Advertiser Geelong Young Star Classic Final

Billed as the clash between the Angela Langton and Darren Brown kennels the Final of the Geelong Advertiser Young Star Classic provided patrons with a race filled with excitement. TAB punters found it hard to settle on a favourite with Cosmic Zeus, Que Sera Sera and Level Five all having that honour at stages leading up to starting time. As the dogs were loaded away Que Sera Sera became the outright favourite at $3.20 with Cosmic Zeus at $3.50 and Level Five on $4.10 steady in the market were Miss Tayliana at $8.20 and Migrate at $9.00.

With the two favoured candidates missing the start slightly and Miss Tayliana gaining a clear run from Box 8 the 26kg bitch was soon in front and on the bunny and held on gamely to defeat the fast finishing Migrate by 1.25 lengths with Level Five in third position 3,25 lengths further back in a winning time of 25.75.

Lara trainer David Geall accepted the trophy and stated that Miss Tayliana would progress to the Ballarat Heats of the Young Star Classic to be run next Wednesday night. GGRC thanks the Geelong Advertiser and Stihl for their sponsorship of this event and series and also the owners and trainers for their support for the concept of a Tristar series.
